My name is Natalie Cruz and I became a barefoot advocate and farrier after my Paint horse, Boomer, was diagnosed with navicular to explain his mystery lameness. The traditional farrier I was using never returned my calls when he could not keep the shoes on. So I contacted a local barefoot trimmer who gave me trimming lessons and then she directed me to Pete Ramey clinics ( www.hoofrehab.com), and Martha Olivo, a local trimmer who supplied cadaver hooves for dissection (off deceased race horses, sadly) so that I could gain interior hoof knowledge and expertise. I also attended clinics with Maureen Tierney who teaches the Hoof Guided Method of trimming. I now use this method exclusively as of 2018. After Boomer's successful rehabilitation to soundness which took 4 months, I began trimming horses for others in 2006. Boomer was high point adult games horse at Nokesville Horse Society for two years with me aboard and he is now owned by Janine Wellington. She went on to compete with him until his retirement at 25.
I am now in the process of establishing a trimming business in Monroe and Brown Counties of Indiana. I grew up in Bloomington/Ellettsville Indiana but joined the Marines and was stationed in Virginia and stayed there for 35 years. I recently moved back to Indiana from Virginia on 10/1/21 after the death of my spouse.
